People are way too afraid of what other people think. They make things more difficult for themselves because they don’t want other people to judge them. Rather than focusing on their happiness they focus on what other people will think and deny themselves something that would have made them happy.
When someone states that their goal is to stay home as long as possible they should do everything they can in support of that goal. Everything they can includes equipping themselves and their home with whatever supportive devices that will further that goal. Things like: medical alert equipment, grab bars, stair lifts and walk in showers to name a few.
Unfortunately, people frequently don’t want those devices. They are worried that other people will think they look old or weak. Therefore, they resist the opportunity to help themselves achieve their goal because they’re worried about what others might think. The place that’s theirs. Where no one else matters.
Here’s the rub though… It’s easy to look at other people and say they’re behaving irrationally by worrying about what other people think about them. Our loved one who is resisting help thinks his or her friend made a mistake when they did the same thing. They’ve seen people refuse help that could have kept them home. Most people don’t judge others for using supportive devices when they are needed. And if anyone does judge others for doing that their opinion shouldn’t matter.
I hope there will come a day when people focus on themselves and their goals. When that happens they may put their goals before anyone else’s negative thoughts and live the life they want to live. Not the life that others think they should.
