Today we cover two important issues. The first is capacity and liability. What happens when your loved one has capacity and wants to do something that goes against medical recommendations? Can you be liable if they get hurt or suffer a bad outcome? What if they don’t have capacity? These are the issues we discuss in the first part of the show. In the second part we look at the issue of guilt. What happens when someone gets hurt on your watch? What if they have capacity and insist on doing something that leads to them getting hurt? How do you feel? How should you feel?
The difficult issues we discuss this week will be faced by most caregivers. Hopefully this episode will make dealing with them easier.
Our quote of the week is: When you’re a kid, you have this feeling like you’re indestructible. Your mortality doesn’t even occur to you. But as time goes by, you realize, “I better cut this out or that out if I want to continue to exist.’ -David Johansen aka Buster Poindexter.
